Activities at Chongwe River Camp

Chongwe River Camp offers many exciting activities, ranging from game drives and bush walks to fishing for tiger fish and boat trips down the Zambezi River. The Lower Zambezi is renowned for superb canoeing safaris – the most unobtrusive way of encountering big game.

Exceptional game-viewing opportunities are available from the camp, and it is not uncommon to spot leopard in this territory – kills have even been sighted during night drives. Both day and night drives are available, and groups can plan their activities around their individual preferences. Chongwe actually specialises in walking safaris, affording time to learn some of the no-so-well-known facts of the bush. And sometimes we surprise our guests with special dinners or picnics out in the bush.

Fishing and Boating
The Zambezi is home to one of the world's premier game fish, the tiger fish, which can grow to weigh ten or 12 kilograms in this part of the world, and is a superb fighter. There is always some variation between fact and popular belief when it comes to tiger fishing, so be aware that we operate according to a strict catch-and-release policy. There are also plenty of bream and chessa to eat or use as bait, as well as many varieties of catfish. You will certainly have a fight on your hands if you hook a vundu, which can grow to weight almost 100 lbs! For the first-timers, we have expert fishing guides who will help you catch your first tiger. Standard tackle is provided, so fly-fishermen should bring their own. Please enquire further for fly-tackle advice.

Canoeing
The activity for which the Lower Zambezi is most well known is canoeing. It is a special experience for the able-bodied nature lover, but not something we would encourage for a nervous client. However, only the safest routes are used and there is still no better way to get close to drinking elephants and other wildlife. Overnight camping on an island can be arranged and early booking is required.
Bush Walks
As with many owner-run camps in Zambia, walking safaris are a favourite activity. Walks are done with a guide who carries a .457-calibre gun to ensure your safety. The area is extremely rich in game and sightings are many, but you will have plenty of time to relax as well and enjoy a picnic or breakfast next to the picturesque Chongwe waterfalls. Those guests who really enjoy walking can opt for an extensive trip into the parks, although early booking is required as this is a popular activity and only a certain number of guides are available.
Game Drives
Both day and night game drives are conducted in the park, and the likelihood of not seeing another vehicle on a four-hour trip is very good. In fact, as a courtesy to our guests, should we come across another vehicle, we stay well away from each other so as not to crowd sightings.  The Lower Zambezi has more big game than most destinations, and lion, leopard, buffalo, hippo and elephant are frequently seen. Impala, waterbuck, warthog, kudu and baboons are virtually guaranteed.  The birding in the area is spectacular as there are so many water-dependant species on the Zambezi. The mountain in the background offers yet another habitat in which to view wildlife.
