About Lower Zambezi

The Lower Zambezi region is relatively underdeveloped. The most accessible area, and an area of abundant game, is in the lower valley next to the Zambezi River. This is where The Lower Zambezi National Park lies.

The park is situated opposite the famous Mana Pools Game Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the land on both sides of the river is an enormous wildlife sanctuary

The Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4092 km2, although most of its game is concentrated along the valley floor. There is an escarpment along the northern end, which acts as a natural barrier to most of the park’s animal species. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the river’s edge. Island-hopping buffalo and waterbuck are also common. This region is known for its lion and leopard, and it is not unusual to come across kills by these amazing creatures.

Under a dense canopy of huge winter-thorn acacias, the camp occupies an unrivalled location, used twice by David Livingstone on his travels, and by Courtney Serous when he hunted in this, his favourite wilderness.
